We are researching methods for determining the level of oxygen delivery to different organs and in cancer.
Oxygen-ehnanced MRI
OE-MRI allows us to monitor oxygen delivery to participants using MRI. Individuals breathe elevated levels of oxygen while being scanned and we monitor the impact of oxygen on organs using a range of MRI and analysis methods. Oxygen itself is not MRI-visible, but its influence on tissue water can be monitored.
Lungs
We use T1-weighted and T2*-weighted MRI to assess the delivery of oxygen to the lungs. This provides information on ventilation, gas transfer, and perfusion.
Cancer
Oxygen-enhanced MRI allows the hypoxic status of tumours to be assessed. We use T1-weighted MRI to identify regions within tumours with different degrees of oxygen delivery and perfusion.
